About this entry

A defining entry in the Top 100 Tech. Sitting at number 31, Half-Light Lamp earned its place through a combination of craft, context, and consensus among the twenty-four editors who maintain this list. The companions immediately above and below it on this ranking are worth reading in the same sitting. The editors’ note placed it here on the basis of three criteria: durability across re-reads (or re-watches, or re-plays), influence on the entries that came after it, and the degree to which it could only have been made by the person — or team — who made it.

In the comparative table maintained by the Tech desk, Half-Light Lamp sits within a band of 2834 that contains some of the most contested swaps of the year. Editors vote with arguments; a swap requires three editors and one written defense.

From Wikipedia

The Half-Light Symphony is the first EP by New Zealand progressive rock band Battle Circus. A concept record depicting mankind's transitional stages of existence following a cataclysmic nuclear disaster, the EP is divided into four distinct movements that provide a narrative for each part of the story. The research and hypotheses of US-based academic Dr. Philip K. Mossman heavily influenced the band, and were central to the themes of the album. A recording of Dr. Mossman reciting a passage from his paper entitled "Epoch" was sent to the band by the now-deceased professor's wife, and was included in the final track "Mossman's Epoch". Throughout the New Zealand tour for the album the band would perform The Half-Light Symphony in its entirety, from start to finish.
